Dear Friend,

Now that I’m on vacation (at home by myself), I’m starting to notice how skewed my notions of rest are. For example, the last thing I did before leaving work was make a to-do list of all the things I wanted to accomplish for work during this . . . vacation. I’m talking lesson planning, reading five of the novels I’ll be teaching next semester, grading papers — all things that are work-related. I don’t necessarily hate doing these things, they 100% do not qualify as rest.

I make these ambitious plans for what I’m going to accomplish during vacation, and then I get so bitter…
